The admin part can be particularity hard since by definition administrators should have the ability to administrate which can mean to access your file. In Domino you actually can lock down the environment, even if you have to go quite a number of steps. It is a typical case of "who controls the controller" This is my wash-list:

Bruce just pinged me with a dilemma: he wanted a way to to make URL's clickable when displayed in a view column from within the Notes client. I wracked my brain momentarily, and the only idea I could come up with was using the Inviewedit trick that I first saw Chris Blatnick allude to in his CoolMail demo (explained later in greater detail). This isn't ideal, of course, as that technique requires that you click an icon column - perhaps immediately adjacent to the URL - not the URL itself... ...

It's one of my favorite things to do: disappear into the back row (or a nondescript middle seat if the punk kids have already commandeered the back row), dig into the popcorn and savor the solitude. It wasn't about the movie so much tonight; it was about taking advantage of having a babysitter. My wife has about three separate Sex and the City nights planned in the coming weeks, and tonight was her first. Since I

Patrick Kwinten responses with a rather surprising remark. an excellent demonstration how BAD the support for CSS and HTML in the Notes client is. Au contraire, quintessens! CSS can be used for this purpose quite nicely in the Notes client! All y

I’m sure many Notes developers have gone through this problem before: “I want to load a different subform after the form is loaded”. Unfortunately, Notes doesn’t let you do that, and so ways have to be found around this… layers, hide/whens, sections, programmatic tables, etc. But let’s say you reeeeaallllyyy want to dynamically load a subform, for example, when the user selects a value from a dropdown box. Here’s a way of doing it, supposing the default subform is “sfm_Default” and the subfor

Automatically Run An Agent When Server Starts

Automatically Run An Agent When Server Starts April 17, 2008 – 8:29 am You want an agent to automatically run each time a Lotus® Domino® server starts up. How can this be accomplished? In version 7.x or earlier you can create a Program document set to run “at startup” in the Domino Directory. For example, on a Windows® platform, the Basics tab of such a Program document would look like: Program name: nserver Command line: -c “tell amgr run ‘database_name.nsf’ ‘agent_name’” Note that both

I had an iteresting discussion with a customer this week. They use Domino and dotNet for their web applications. Their decission criteria when to use what: if the data of the application needs to be fed into their data warehouse at a later point of time, they use dotNet since storage there typically ends up in an RDBMS. The biggest problem they face, in their own voice: "Our users are pretty spoiled from Domino. They expect days as turnaround time for applications. Using dotNet it takes at least

Julian's post about JavaScript stack traces reminded me of something I wrote late last year and had been meaning to mention but never did. Web applications have steadily become more interactive over the last couple of years, and have been evolving from a collection of pages to a sequence of interactions and events. On the one hand, this can be very positive for the user, as we're no longer forced to trigger an entire page refresh for every mouse click. On the other hand, one challenge this pre

If you went to Rocky's session at Lotusphere 2008 on Formula Tricks, you heard about the @Transform function. It lets you take a list of values and run a formula against it to change some or all of the values in the list based on your criteria. I've used it in two places recently and it works far better than anything we could have done prior to the function becoming available (which was in Release 6). In my first example, I have a list of dates and a list of numbers. I want to sum the numbers o

Application performance in Notes and Domino can greatly vary depending on the number of views and the view selection formulas you use. When inheriting databases applications for maintainance there is no real easy way to get an overview what view selection formulas have been used. So I did write myself a function that creates a document with such an overview table.See the function below. To test it I simply copy it into an agent and call it for the current database. Of course you could think of

SnTT: Nested Group Display Behaviour in Sametime April 4th, 2008 For those of you who are not already noticed, Sametime Connect Client 7.51 or later (and also the embedded version in the Notes 8.0.1 Client), only displays server groups (from the Domino Directory) as a single concatenated level. As a result, any nested groups or sub-groups within it, are automatically ‘expanded’ into their (unique) constitute members and the merged result displayed. This is useful. Conversely, user defined ‘l

Last January I wrote about how to test with different versions of IE using virtual PC images containing a pre-activated copy of Win XP2. The images I originally linked to were set to expire on April 1 and, as I expected, Microsoft renewed their offering and are now making available six images containing pre-activated combinations of Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista, and IE6, IE7 or IE8. This new set of images will expire on July 3.

In Part 1 I introduced the approach to code injection and some sample LotusScript Code to pull a design element, transform it and push it back. Missing there was the function that actually implemented that method. I'm using a Java class to do that, which I wrap into LS2J. The LotusScript function looks like this: .lotusscript { font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 9pt; color: black; } .ls-comment { color: green; } .ls-quote { color: gray; } .ls-datatype { color: orange; } .ls-operator { color: bl

The old out-of-office agent comes in for some stick now and again. Its been vastly improved in nd8 (good news), but there's still some really cool ways to break it. For instance, if you have users who set their out of office agent, but it just never works - whats happened ? One issue I found this week was if the user only has editor access to their mail file (a good thing), then the out of office activation creates an AdminP request, which then enables the agent in their mail file. For this

In an earlier entry I discussed how to maintain custom system databases. It works well when you add design elements or change them wholesale. However it doesn't work very well when you tweak design elements. Something like: adding one action in a form or using a different subform for a specific task. Once an updated system template is available, you have to go back and recreate all your changes in your template. This entry discusses how to automate these little fixes. There are a number of movi

Mimicing the tabbed table function

The problem with the Notes tabbed table is that you can not, by default, add an action when you click on a tab. I created a tabbed table function in the way you probably would do it on the web (with hidding/showing divs) so a tab is just a table column with a text hotspot in it. When you click on the text a different table would be shown with an ‘active tab’ highlighted: The reason for this solution is that the form is presented in a dialogbox and I have to set a parameter from which tab t
