Coincidence?? I mentioned American Pie in my post yesterday, and Ross Mayfield declared yesterday to be The Day The Music Died. Freaky! I don't quite know what to think about all the noise about media consolidation. A number of people whom I respect quite a bit are speaking out against what the FCC has done. I can look at it as an optimist, or pessimist, and still not see a whole lot wrong with it. As an optimist, I'd observe that the world didn't come to an end because the New York Times owned a radio station in New York City back in the days before television became most people's primary source of information. In fact, that radio station's news reports were very good -- but there were plenty of other radio stations broadcasting news from other sources. The pessimist perspective is that television has already descended into such depths of bad taste entertainment and poor news reporting, and the same terrible syndicated shows are already on all the independent local channels far too much of the time... so consolidation of ownership really can't make things any worse.
