Is It Necessary? Or Is It Just Wrong? Not one to be shy about his opinions Andrew weighs in with his opinion on the many news stories that are quoting Newsweekmagazine's story about possibly delaying the US general election in the event of a terrorist attack. Andrew may be getting a bit ahead of himself, in that Newsweek isn't naming sources, and I can find no record of Secretary Ridge himself commenting on delaying elections, but I mostly share his sentiment. Anybody worth his salt in Washington would know that this is a story that could spin out of control for a long time, and if the inquiry were to have been made at all, every possible step to make it a bi-partisan and neutral inquiry should have been taken. E.g., Ridge should have ahd the Senate leaders of both parties approach at least three Justices of The Supreme Court appointed by different Presidents for advisory opinions as the very first step. That may not be the normal protocol for an Executive department seeking a legal opinion, but these aren't ordinary times, and the federal elections aren't an ordinary issue.
